How to Calculate Pivot Points?

To calculate Pivot Points in Forex, you need to have the high, low, and close prices of the previous trading day. Once you have these values, you can use the following formula to calculate the Pivot Point:

  • Pivot Point (PP) = (High + Low + Close) / 3

After calculating the Pivot Point, you can then calculate the support and resistance levels using the following formulas:

  • Support 1 (S1) = (2 x PP) – High
  • Support 2 (S2) = PP – (High – Low)
  • Support 3 (S3) = Low – 2 x (High – PP)
  • Resistance 1 (R1) = (2 x PP) – Low
  • Resistance 2 (R2) = PP + (High – Low)
  • Resistance 3 (R3) = High + 2 x (PP – Low)

In this formula, PP is the Pivot Point, High is the highest price of the previous day, Low is the lowest price of the previous day, and Close is the closing price of the previous day.

Pivot Points Strategy

Here’s a simple Pivot Point trading strategy that you can consider:

  • Identify the Pivot Point, Support, and Resistance levels for the current trading day using the formulas mentioned earlier.
  • Look for price action near these levels, such as a price bounce or rejection. For example, if the price is approaching a support level, look for signs that the price may bounce off this level, such as a bullish candlestick pattern or an oversold condition.
  • Enter a long position (buy) if the price bounces off a support level or breaks through a resistance level. Alternatively, enter a short position (sell) if the price is rejected at a resistance level or breaks through a support level.
  • Repeat the process for each trading day, adjusting your levels based on the previous day’s prices.

  • Look for a bearish candlestick pattern, such as a shooting star, bearish engulfing pattern, or dark cloud cover, near one of the resistance levels.
  • Enter a short position (sell) once the price has broken below the low of the bearish candlestick pattern or a support level, such as the Pivot Point or the first Support level (S1).

  • Only considers price data: Pivot Points only consider price data and do not take into account fundamental factors that may affect the market, such as news events or economic data releases.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Pivot Points are a popular technical analysis tool used by many Forex traders to identify potential support and resistance levels for the current trading day. However, Pivot Points may not work in all market conditions, and may produce false signals. Additionally, they only consider price data and do not take into account fundamental factors that may affect the market. As with any technical analysis tool, traders should use Pivot Points as part of their overall trading plan and exercise proper risk management.
